Yesterday Governor Ned Lamont signed into law new gun laws. The legislation, known as House Bill 6667, includes banning openly carrying firearms. The bill was introduced by the governor at the start of the 2023 legislative session and developed in part with bipartisan state lawmakers.

Yesterday the Connecticut Senate passed a two-year, $51 billion state budget hours after the House overwhelmingly passed the same legislation The bill passed the Senate by a vote of 35-1. The new budget, expected to be signed into law by Lamont, would take effect on July 1st.

 

One person was rescued from the water after going overboard in Long Island Sound, off Cornfield Point in Old Saybrook. Emergency crews from several departments responded. A Coast Guard helicopter assisted in the rescue operation. The man was brought ashore and taken to an area hospital. 

The USS San Juan returned to Naval Submarine Base New London yesterday after a six-month deployment. Its crew of more than 110 people were reunited with their family members at an emotional homecoming celebration after going nearly 37,6000 miles.

 

Police have identified a man who was found dead in a vehicle in Westerly over the weekend. The man 
identified as 54-year-old Matthew Babineau, had been reported missing the day prior. Officers say that foul play is not suspected although they continue to investigate.
