The Los Angeles Angels announced that outfielder Mike Trout has a fractured hamate bone in his left hand and has been placed on the 10-day injured list. Hamate fractures typically require surgery and require with a 3-7 week recovery.

Trout, 31, suffered the injury during Monday’s game against the San Diego Padres, when he fouled back an 0-1 pitch from Nick Martinez in the seventh inning. He shook his left arm, returning to the batter’s box, but called for assistance before seeing another pitch.  Trout said Monday night: “I just took a swing and something felt uncomfortable. I can’t describe the pain I felt. I never felt it before, ever, before this. I never had wrist problems or anything. Just freak things.” Trout was replaced in the lineup by Mickey Moniak.

Trout entered Monday’s game batting .263 with 18 homers and 44 RBIs, and two stolen bases in 81 games; he had two hits and a walk Monday night, including an RBI single in the sixth.  His injury comes after he was chosen to his 11th career All-Star Game, set to start next week in Seattle.
