The Orlando Magic have fired head coach Jamahl Mosley following their first-round playoff exit, the team confirmed Monday, marking the end of his five-year tenure.

“We’re grateful to Jamahl for all he’s done for the Orlando Magic,” president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman said in a statement. “We appreciate his leadership and the positive contributions he made as head coach. While this was a difficult decision, we feel it’s time for a new voice and fresh perspective. We wish Jamahl and his family nothing but the best.”

Mosley’s firing came shortly after Orlando’s season ended in dramatic fashion. After slipping in their opening Play-In game against Philadelphia, the Magic secured the No. 8 seed with a dominant win over Charlotte. They then surged ahead 3-1 in their series against the top-seeded Detroit Pistons, putting themselves on the brink of a major upset. But the momentum vanished late—Orlando dropped three straight games, including a crushing Game 6 at home where they squandered a 24-point lead, before losing Game 7 on the road. Franz Wagner’s absence due to a calf injury in those final games proved pivotal, as the team struggled to maintain its defensive edge and composure without him.

Mosley, 47, finishes with a 189-221 record. Hired in 2021 after stints as an assistant with several NBA teams, he helped guide Orlando through a rebuild into a competitive playoff team. The Magic reached the postseason in each of the past three years, though they were unable to advance beyond the opening round.

During his tenure, the team became known for its defensive identity, ranking among the league’s best in recent seasons. Despite that progress, offensive struggles persisted, with Orlando consistently finishing near the bottom of the league in scoring efficiency. However, despite back-to-back winning seasons and division titles, the Magic’s inability to convert promise into deeper playoff success ultimately led to the coaching change.
