Governor Ned Lamont announced that the U.S. and state flags will fly at half-staff in Connecticut until Thursday to honor the victims of the mass shooting in Allen, Texas. Eight people were killed, and seven wounded, Saturday when a gunman opened fire on shoppers at an outlet mall.

A man charged in the death of his 13 month old daughter was in court last week and was denied a motion to reduce bond. 38 year old Travis Schubel was charged with manslaughter in the death of his daughter in Salem in February 2022. He will remain held on a $3.8 million bond.

A second man has been arrested in connection to an illegal fireworks display that injured multiple people on the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation last Fourth of July. 37 year old Evans Pascal of New London is facing multiple charges including reckless endangerment.

Governor Ned Lamont recently announced that he is nominating retired U.S. Army Brigadier General Ronald Welch of Waterford to serve as commissioner of the state Department of Veterans Affairs. Since his retirement in 2017, Welch has been working for a local nonprofit organization to assist veterans in need.

One person died and two others were injured after a two car crash in Groton on Saturday. Officers say that a Jetta crossed the yellow center line and collided with a Jeep on Buddington Road. The driver of the Jetta was pronounced dead. A woman and a 5 year old in the jeep were hospitalized with non life threatening injuries.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Friday for a new pier at the University of Rhode Island’s Bay Campus. The dock features a two-ton crane for lifting small boats, as well as a research shed. It is 200 feet long and 42 feet wide, with a connecting bridge which is 210 feet long.
